It was started during ancient Egyptian period when the date of the coronation of the king was celebrated as their birthday. Greeks started the celebration of birthday of Gods and Goddesses. The practice further evolved when the Romans started birthday celebration of men. Women were not allowed to celebrate birthdays.
During early 18th century, the German bakers saw a great commercial opportunity in the concept and undertook great marketing effort thus evolving the concept of celebrating the event along with a cake and candle. In 1883, Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill wrote the song, ‘’ Good morning to all’’ which with some modifications turned into the birthday anthem, ‘Happy birthday to u’.
Human beings have the tendency to attach emotions with events. This is a typical manifestation of James-Lange theory of emotion which says that,’’ we feel happy because we laugh, we feel sorrow because we cry and we feel fear because we tremble’’. Like wise, we search of our happiness in the birthday bash. People find in it, a day different, a day of joy, a day of fun or a day of relaxation.

Birthday might be utilized as an annual assessment point where one could pause a while and look at the course of life and make necessary corrections if necessary.
