Karna: A monologue – I regard myself as the leader of the downtrodden. Others may consider differently, but I don’t care because;

Now, who shall arbitrate?
Ten men love what I hate,
Shun what I follow,

Slight what I receive;
Ten, who in ears and eyes
Match me: we all surmise,
They this thing, and I that:

Whom shall my soul believe?

I abhor injustice because I have been treated unjustly since my birth. I am the son of God Sun but my own mother deserted me at the time of my birth because she was afraid the social condemnation. She feared the consequences of her act and was not bold enough face her family and society. Her cowardice and timidity made her place me in a small basket and float on the surface of a river. No doubt, she was remorseful at that time, but her desire to enjoy the pleasures of human life overpowered her motherly affection. Was her attitude not condemn-able? Was her act not unjust?

Radha and Adhirath, a charioteer of the Kaurava king Dhritrashrta found me floating on the surface go the river. As the couple was issue less at that time, they adapted me and brought me up affectionately.Thus the son of a God changed his caste from Kshatriya to Shudra and came to be known as Soot Putra.

Consequently, Guru Dronacharya, who was teaching the kaurava and pandavas prince refused to accept me as his student. He pushed me out of his hermitage. Humiliated and disappointed, I approached Parshurama, the best archer of that time . As he was inimical to kshatriyas, I could not expect him to make my guru. The man who did not teach the kshatriyas could not be expected to teach a soot putra. So, i decided to take a refuge in the falsehood. I presented myself as a brahmin youth before him. He was highly impressed with my humility, devotion, and knowledge and was convinced enough to accept me as his disciple.
