Karna: A monologue– At that time Arjun was presenting some ordinary feats of archery, but he was being applauded very much by royalty and gentry. Seeing this I made up my mind to display my skill. At once I jumped into arena and challenged Arjuna for competition. Seeing me Arjuna was astounded. Guru Drona said “Who are you? Why have you challenged my pupil? What rights have to disturb the event? Said I, “I am lord Parasuram’s disciple Karna. I also want to participate in various competitions.”

At this Kripacharya spoke up “O young man! This combat event is meant only for royal princes. Which royal clam do you belong?”

On hearing this, I felt humiliated and so grew angry. I shouted,” I do not belong to any royal family. I’m a Suta Putra.

At this retort of mine, Bhishma stood and announced, “Then you have no right to participate. Moreover, you are not a prince. Go and acquire a kingdom. Then come and participate. I had no answer of the remark. I was about to depart quietly through raging in anger.

Suddenly the eldest kaurava prince Duryodhana left his seat came in the middle of the arena and said very loudly. “I make karna the king of Anga kingdom” saying this, he put a crown on my head and said “ Now karna can participate in the competition.’’

Said guru Drona, “No he can’t because he is a suta putra . In Kaurava Kingdom, suta’s can only make chariots. They have no right acquire the knowledge of martial art. Moreover the competition is ending. There is no time for new and fresh combats.”

Common people of Hastinapur welcomed me as the king of Anga Pradesh eagerly and excitedly. I left the place with the Kaurava princes. On that note, I was overwhelmed with Duryodhhana’s boldness and affection and decided to be devoted to him throughout my life and Arjun’s permanent rival and enemy.
