Immortality- Boon or Bane?
Whether,Immortality is a boon or a bane?
Wandering all over the world, I am unable to understand whether, immortality is a boon or a bane. How happy I was when I came to know that I was blessed with immortality! I was on cloud nine because there was no ground to disbelieve it, as I was blessed with another divine gift. It was a precious jewel studded on my forehead. This fact was conveyed to me by my father Guru Drona, in whom I had full faith.
It was an accursed day when I met my intimate friend crowned Prince Duryodhana, lying injured on the battle ground. His thigh was broken in a mace with Bheem. He was extremely dismayed and disappointed. He had lost all hope. Seeing this, I was extremely sad. But I did my best to assure him that I would take his revenge.by murdering the Pandavas during the night. My words gave him some hope. At once, he appointed me as the last general of Kaurava army without soldiers because only a handful were left after the seventeen days of war.
At the dead hour of night, I sneaked into the Pandava’s camp. I had the information that after the victory celebrations, al the Pandava brothers were slumbering in the same camp. I was elated because it made my work very easy. Inside the camp, there was very dim light at that time. Being overconfident and certain, I beheaded all the Pandava brothers hastily, collected their heads, set the camp on fire and left the place as soon as possible.
Immediately, I went the place where my friend Duryodhana was lying in pain waiting for me eagerly. Beaming with satisfaction, confidence and pleasure, I presented my friend, the bag containing the heads. Duryodhana accepted the gift pack with a smirk on his face. He opened the bag with efforts because of intense pain due to severe injury and placed the five heads on ground. Now, he started breaking the skulls one by one. He smashed four heads saying that he would break Bheem’s skull in the end. As soon as he broke the last one, he burst out- ‘ It cannot be Bheems’s skull. I cannot break it so easily.’ The turning towards me , he yelled, ‘ O you condemned fool! You haven’t killed the pandavas. You have assassinated their son’s. You ungrateful fool! You have destroyed my clan. Now there is no one left in my dynasty to perform the last rites for the peace of our souls. O accused man!! Flee and run to save your life because Pandavas will not spare you for this heinousness.’ Thus, condemning me, my friend left for his heavenly abode.
After my friend’s demise, my heart was filled with grief and fear. I was so much frightened of pandavas that I could not stay there even for a moment. I fled from the battlefield to escape from the pandavas, but could not succeed. The indomitable Arjuna being led by Lord Krishna ran after me in hot persuit and overtook me within a short span of time. Seeing Krishna and Arjuna, my valor and strength vanished into air. I could do nothing when Arjuna shot arrows at me. Speechless, I was fixed at my place like a statue. Arjuna caught me by hair and took out his sword to behead me saying, ‘You dreadful sinner! You have enemity with me. What had our sons done to deserve such cruelty ? Why did you kill them?’
I wanted to say that I also had affection for them , but it was a case of mistaken identity. But alas! I could say nothing.
Lord Krishna said ‘ Arjuna! Don’t try to kill him. He is blessed with the boon of immortality, so this is not possible.’
Arjuna exclaimed,’ O Govinda! As he has assassinated innocent youths, he deserves severe punishment. What should I do to punish him?’ Said Krishna ‘ Take out the jewel studded on his fore head and leave him to suffer pain and remorse till eternity.’
Arjuna acted upon the advice of lord Krishna and left me to suffer loneliness till the dooms day.
Since then, I have been wandering all over the earth lonely and un-consoled. Unlike other immortals ,people like Lord Hanuman, Vibhishan and Kripacharya, I have no one to talk and sympathize with me. I am all all alone- Alone in a wide wide sea.
