The State of Unhappiness
Have you ever monitored the difference between your breathing habits when you feel happy and when you feel sad or disturbed? Their lies a difference! When you are happy, incoming breath is deeper while when you are unhappy, the outgoing breathe is longer. This imbalance is clearly evident during the two states of emotion. Maharshi Patanjali described this diversity as Shwāsa prashwāsa.
Occasionally, you must have noticed yourself in a continued state of arousal or disturbance. Lack of co-ordination between the body and the mind is implicit. According to Patanjali, this is the state of Angamejayatva when the body is not listening to your mind. It’s the lack of coordination between the body and the mind and the body wins over. The body does not listen to you.
Most of us occasionally experience a state of pessimism where everything appears doomy or gloomy. A taste of bitterness poisons the tongue which might influence the tongue to spit poison through the only ammunition it has- i.e. speech. Patanjali described this as Dourmanasya or bitterness in the mind. You feel bitter inside. You do not feel good with anybody. Anyone you see or meet, there is bitterness. There is bitterness with one self.
Sorrow or Dukh is the coaxial focal point which is the cause as well as the resultant of all the few states mentioned above. Dukh manifests itself physically as well as mentally.
Liberation of body and mind from the psychological blockages is the ultimate path to happiness. Bondage causes sorrow. Merge yourself with the nature. You are the part thereof. Greater you try to distinguish yourself from the rest, more will be the anxiety or tension. An object raised above the ground can’t be expected to remain in a stable state unless it touches the ground. Even if somehow the object is fixed at a higher state, tension is bound to occur within the object because of constant gravitational pull. The ultimate state of consciousness the true destination of happiness is the state of non-possession and complete dependence on nature for happiness.
