Parental role and occupational risks in drug addiction
One finding is that young people from unhappy homes, where parents show little interest in their children and use harsh physical punishment, are more apt to drugs than youngsters from happier families (Beer & Corrado 1974).
Parental values are also important youths from conservative homes that emphasize traditional social and religious values and the importance of long range goals are less apt to become involved with drugs than those from permissive and liberal homes where doing your own thing is encouraged (Blum etal 1972). Perhaps the most powerful influence is the degree to which parents use the drugs. When parents make free children are likely to sample drugs themselves (Smast & Fejer 1972).
Occupational risk in some cases proves to be a cause of drug addiction. Doctors, nurses and pharmacists are most prone to such risks (Putnam & Ellinwood 1966 Quinn 1970). They may be tempted by easy availability and underlying curiosity. But more often it is seen that occupations like that of miners, divers etc. who have to face prolonged environmental stress in order to cope up with stress, may take to drug and eventually end up becoming drug addicts.
Other Causes of Drug addiction:
People with chronic illness may be given drugs to control their pain or get temporary relief from it and if this goes on for a unduly long period a person may eventually develop an habit of taking pills and become dependent on them.
In most countries the users of dependence producing drugs give or sell drugs to their friends or associates at little or no profit. Thus they try to increase their membership. The pushing of drugs to extent that unwilling nonusers are persuaded or forced to buy it is thought to rather unusual but however if a nonuser wishes to join a drug oriented peer group he may well be ‘pushed’ in using drugs as a condition of becoming a member.
Creative Experience / Thinking
Some people believe that drugs enhance the creative capacity and creative thinking power; hence it is necessary to take drugs for producing great works. They also believe that for understanding modern poetry, literature and scientific inventions drugs are must. Thus to enhance their creativity they start taking it and soon become addicted to it.
