He who is Contented is Happy!
As I take a trip down the memory lane, recalling my childhood bedtime stories, I recollect a beautiful story which was narrated to me by my father “The King and the Shirt”. I am writing it down for those who haven’t read it and also for those who have read it but have forgotten it, because this story has immense relevance nowadays. Once upon a time there was a King who became weak with illness and all his royal physicians and magicians could not treat him. Then one of his royal advisors suggested that he should wear the shirt of the happiest man in his kingdom. Many days passed but the royal messengers could not find a happy man. Finally, his son came across a poor man living in a tiny hut who was happy. He thought that he will ask the “happy man” to give his shirt for the king but to his surprise the poor man had none!!!
Now let us ask ourselves a simple question “What makes us happy? A big house, a new car, a high paying job, beauty, so on and so forth. It is no surprise that in present times our happiness relies entirely on the materialistic things. Besides, the more we have, the more we want, it’s an unending circle. Suppose we buy a new phone, we all love our new phones, but if our friend buys a better one, our phone loses its charm.
A lot is being read, written and discussed about the “art of being happy”, workshops are conducted on it all over the world. But to me the secret of being happy simply lies in being “content” and that’s what the story teaches us. Contentment is the state of being happy and satisfied with whatever you have. You are happy no matter what is going on in your life. Many might argue that contentment is just one aspect of being happy but still then I will maintain that it is the most important one.
If you learn to be content, you will always be happy!!
