Anxiety is characterized by excessive worry about a number of events or activities. Sometimes, the anxiety is related to a specific cause while at other instances, there lie a free flowing anxiety. This is a future oriented mood state in which a person attempts to be constantly be ready to deal with an upcoming negative event.
Anxiety is characterized by restlessness, difficulty in concentration, sense of fatigue, sleep disturbance and irritability. Faster heart rate, sweating, trembling/shaking, numbness or tingling sensation, gastro-intestinal upset and nausea are some other symptoms of anxiety.
People having pessimistic style of thinking are more prone to get anxiety easily. The sense of learned helplessness, negative self talk, low self esteem is related to this problem. Stressful situations like marriage breakdown, work pressure and financial strain are likely to act as a trigger for anxiety.
Usually, anxiety is related to some specific trigger. The person needs to identify this trigger and develop his coping mechanism against this. No two individuals are the same and so will be their different anxiety management technique. The most effective technique against anxiety is distraction. The person needs to dis-engage himself from the anxiety producing stimulus and create a different line of interest and attention. Talking to someone, maintaining a positive attitude and sense of humor alleviates the mood. Journaling i.e. penning down their thoughts is another wonderful technique. Our mind unconsciously gets rid of those thoughts which gets penned down by us. Our mind finds that it no longer need to remember those thoughts as they are already stored somewhere. Gradually the anxiety provoking thoughts vanish from our mind. Techniques like yoga, meditation, muscle relaxation techniques etc. also help the person to get rid of his anxiety. The person should realize that everything cannot be controlled in a perfect fashion as desired by them.
A bigger problem exists in our society as some unhealthy anxiety management techniques. Usually a person suffering from anxiety resorts to alcohol, drugs, gambling or other socially forbidden behaviors to divert his attention. This further magnifies the complexity of the problem. One should refrain from such practices.
