The Three Legged Horse
Generally animals are treated with love and affection in India. They are either awed or loved and respected. They are innumerable describing animals’ sacrifices to save their master’s life and vice versa. Chetak, Maharana Pratap’s horse is famous for speed, courage and sacrifice to defend Maharana’s life. The Cow is known as Mata (Mother). But India is land hypocrisy and hypocrites. We Indians are number one in this respect. We pay lip service to ideals and principles. We act quite differently. We call the cow mother but stop feeding and taking care of her, when she grows old and stops giving milk. Then our so called mother roam about on roads and streets finding something to eat and in this process eats polythene and get ill. This is an evidence of our callousness and hypocrisy. We only preach about acting upon our preaching.
The latest example of callousness and cruelty to animals is the attack on a horse named Shaktiman by a BJP MLA Mr. Ganesh Joshi during a demonstration in Dehradun. At that time, Shaktiman was on duty to prevent violence. During demonstration, Mr. Ganesh Joshi got so much excited that he attacked the horse leg with a club that he snatched from a cop. He went on striking the horse’s leg till it was fractured and the horse fell on the ground. The horse was sent to hospital where he was treated carefully by expert doctors. But in spite of best efforts the horse could not be saved and the horse passed away.
The MLA’s cruelty and callousness was condemned widely. But he told a lie unabashedly and claimed that the horse fell accidently and he helped him by offering a bucket full of water. Though the photograph which showing him hitting a horse with a club was published in newspapers; the following day of the incident.
Some animal lovers including Ms. Maneka Gandhi condemned Mr. Joshi for his cruelty and demanded action against him, but it proved to be only a ritual and the demand of action against the MLA was lost in the air of political upheaval in Uttarakhand. Now the situation settled in and calm. The government of Uttarakhand should probe the matter and the MLA in question should be tried for attempt to murder. Only strict action will present an example and prevent other people to behave like this toward animals.
