Teachers’ Day is being celebrated throughout India on 5th September.
Undoubtedly, mother is the first teacher and home is the first school. Yet, teacher and school play a very important role in the growth and development of a Man’s personality not only in childhood, but also in later stage of life. That’s why, in the ancient Indian culture, Guru (the teacher) has been likened to all the forms of God. Teacher is Brahma, teacher is Vishnu, teacher is Shiva, teacher is par-brahma himself.
Dr. Radhakrishnan, the second president of our country was a great teacher. So his birth date is celebrated as the teachers’ day. On this day, teachers are honored by the government. At the time of independence, the condition of teachers was miserable. They were neglected by the government and the society. They were low paid, there was no security of service, there was no scheme for their welfare by the government. They had to struggle hard for pay hike, security of service. They had to struggle hard for pay hike, security of service and other benefits. At last, the government realized its duty towards them and consequently raised their pay granted security of service and launched various schemes for their welfare. The difference between the government and aided schoolteachers was minimized. Thus teachers became a satisfied section of society to some extent. But, with the BJP coming into power, conspiracy began to be hatched against teachers. The teachers of private aided colleges were accused of not doing their duties sincerely and forcing students for private coaching, and thus exploiting them. As a result, the government is thinking of withdrawing the facilities which earlier governments had granted to them. Provident fund has been abolished. Pension has been rendered useless under the present pension scheme. Not only this, teachers were arrested, handcuffed and sent to prison under the new prevention of unfair means in examination.
Teachers should realize that the government is paying them only lip service. They should be prepared to launch a movement to protect their rights and benefits. If they are no vigilant, the politicians of the country will again lead them to their past miserable lot.
