Loosing Weight by Taxing Junk Food
India with the population of 32 crore youths, the country with the largest population of young men is in the grip of obesity. India has been a poor country accursed with malnutrition. How can it suffer from obesity, a disease of affluent society? What is the reason. The reason lies in globalization and liberalization.
Indian life style has always been wholesome. But during the British regime, it was made artificial, un-natural and harmful. By introducing tea, cigarette and DALDA which represents artificially manufactured fat, it was made more unnatural and harmful when globalization and liberalization were introduced in India. Now a day, many foreign companies like Mac D sell food products such as pizza, burger, wafers, and ice cream which are responsible for obesity and diseases related to it.
When the problem began to reach the alarming stage, the government woke up from slumber and tried to find quick solution to it. Consequently, it imposed obesity tax on junk food. Thus the government has put the card before the horse. Will this step solve the problem? No, it will not. The government will fill its coffer by extracting money from common hungry people in the name of protecting their health. just as imposed prohibition cannot solve the problem alcoholism in the same way taxing junk food cannot save people from obesity. The people who want to eat junk food will take it in spite of tax and increased prices. Generally, people know that junk food is harmful for their health, but they are compelled to take it. Secondly, healthy food is not so delicious as junk food to which they are addicted. The step of taxing junk food by the government reveals its greed not its concern for people’s health. If the government is serious about the health of the citizens of the country, it should reduce the price of healthy food items such as pulses, vegetables, fruits and dry fruits. It should discourage shops restaurants, and road side eateries selling these food products. It should launch a campaign to make people aware of the harms of taking junk food. The advertisements of junk food items on TV and media should be banned like those of wine and cigarettes. The government has taken some of these steps. Now it has imposed tax on junk food. This exposes the government’s non seriousness and hypocrisy.
