During 18th and 19th century, Great Britain was an international superpower. Its rivals, France and Portugal were badly vanquished in the competition. It was rightly said that the sun never set in the British empire. England was known for its power, patriotism and diplomacy. This situation continued till the end of world war second. After that, India became free and superpower Great Britain was replaced by America and the USSR. The United Kingdom had to remain contented with the status of a satellite of America. Though, it formed common wealth of its former colonies to satisfy its ego of being a great power till it joined the European common market after great hesitation to satisfy its desire of being super-economic power with its European allies.
In spite of joining the European common market, England was not satisfied. Though its economic status grew, its national pride was still injured that happened at the disintegration of its empire. It had to work with its traditional rival France. The restlessness of the English went on growing and resulted in a movement against European common market. The English government under the leadership of David Cameron had to give in to the pressure of English people. It had to declare a referendum in favor or against being a member of European common market in the country. In the referendum held on 23rd June 2016, the government was defeated. As a result, prime minister Mr. David Cameron resigned and Theresay May was elected as prime minister. The elderly people were responsible for this turmoil, not the young generation which is more liberal and broad minded.
BREXIT will affect England deeply. Its trade with other European countries will get affected because they will withdraw the facilities and rights enjoyed by England as a member of European Common Market. After BREXIT, the people of England will not get employment in other European countries as they will have no opportunities to shift to other European countries easily. Undoubtedly, they will be able to save their culture from foreign influences. But this will be possible only to limited extent. Due to modern transport and communication means, no country can remain aloof and save itself from foreign influence. Asia has already affected England deeply.
Thus England will again become an island with narrow vision and false national pride. Wriggling under the burden of economic pressure, it will revolve round America as a small American satellite aloof and alone, surrounded by big ocean, it will go on beating its chest like Alice in Wonderland.
