Female Genital Mutilation
Two days back,we celebrated the International women’s day. In this era of 21st century, where every one is talking about women liberalization and gender equality, this becomes really hard to believe that certain derogatory practices like FGM are still affecting millions of women.
This is the traditional process of removal of some or all the female genitalia. This is a surgical process done by non-medical professionals and that too under no anesthesia. Usually this is done on a girl child aging between 0-15. This may lead to complications like excessive bleeding, urinary tract infection, urine retention, cyst and child birth problems. This is an extreme torture which may sometime result into the death of the victim.
FGM is practiced in 27 African countries, Indonesia, Yemen and Iraqi Kurdistan and among the diaspora communities around the world. Moreover, it’s quiet unknown to most of us that this stigmatized practice is also prevalent in India in Dawoodi Bohra community.
FGM is known to have no health benefit and recognized by the United Nations (UN) as a human right violation. The World Health Organization (WHO) strongly urges the countries to ensure stringent implement of the ban already in place. The vastness of the practice can be estimated by the fact that more than 200 million girls alive today spread over 30 countries have have undergone this torture. More than 3 million girls are at the risk of FGM annually. In 1997, WHO issued a joint statement against FGM, along with United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
There lie socio-cultural factors behind this ill fated practice. This is a social practice being followed by the communities since long long back. It is considered to be a cultural tradition and considered to be a necessary part in a girl’s rearing.
This becomes the social responsibility of all the literate community of the countries where it is practiced, to spread the awareness among the masses and stop this pain inflicted upon the fairer sex.
STOP FGM NOW!
